Does anyone know the current status of trading NYSE stocks through ECNs? I don't just mean the official status but the actual "Yes, and it's great/terrible" status.

I've been reluctant to trade NYSE stocks because I assumed that there would be significant delays and unpleasant spreads. I'm think that I've read, however, that NYSE stocks can be better behaved. At the Expo, Stuart Townsend said that trading NYSE stocks through ARCA gave you price protection (i.e., that the specialist could not trade through your price on ARCA). That sounds even better than trading NASDAQ stocks.
