Seattle, Wash. (August 24, 2000)—Online jewelry seller Blue Nile recently retained New York based market research firm, NPD Group to conduct an independent consumer survey to find out what men are thinking when they buy jewelry.
Among the more than 1,200 men and women ages 26-60 surveyed, 57% of men said jewelry shopping is stressful, while 75% of the men said they were not knowledgeable about jewelry.
The survey also broke down the jewelry-buying population to consist of 70% men and 30% women. Most people surveyed said they favored shopping for jewelry online because of its convenience, lack of stress, and value.
"Consumers want the assurance that they're making the right decisions when they're making a jewelry purchase," said Mark Vadon, CEO of Blue Nile.
The survey also said the top three occasions for buying jewelry are Christmas, birthdays, and "just because."
"The feedback we've been getting from our customers has been great to hear," said Vadon. "They're telling us they finally understand what they're buying, and that, of course, is what we had in mind when we created Blue Nile," said Vadon.
