What are the odds
Of course if the Moon were a planetesmal captured by the Earth there are some other discrepencies. Why does the Moon have a much lower density than the Earth and is composed primarily of crustal materials, while the Earth has relatively more iron and nickle and heavy elements than other planets of it's size. The obvious answer is that it was the outer layers of the colliding bodies that were ejected to form the Moon. The inner cores fused together to form the Earth.
