Thor Higherdahl(sp?) speculates people in pre-historic times crossed the Atlantic riding the currents. He thinks that explains why you find pyramids on both sides of the ocean. In fact there is a pyramid on one of the Canary Islands that is practically identical to ones found in Mexico. He thinks this might be the source of the Atlantis legends. He made the trip himself on a papirus raft proving at least it would be possible.
