I lean toward some type of Velikovskian disaster. The collapse throughout the basin was complete. Some say it was caused by widespread crop failure or disease. Another theory is the tin they used to make bronze ran out. But that wouldn't explain the utter devastation in the Aegean and Anatolia, where the Hittites disappeared without a trace. We know there were earthquakes and volcanic detonations, thats what did the Minoans in, but the area is too large for that to explain how writing and civilization was lost for centuries.
