Re: Ad in July 24, 2000 Forbes.
Cover story on "The E Gang"; major established companies (GE, Cisco, HP, ...) that are using the Internet effectively. I just got around to reading the article and buried inside the pages is the following full page ad:
Top 2/3 of page is a futuristic picture of two hands, palms facing each other, with light beams zig-zagging between the palms. Very attractive coloring (golds, bronzes and kind of blacks), catches the eye.
Headline above the tips of the fingers: NOW THE ENTIRE INTERNET FITS IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND.
You'd think for a second it is an ad for PALM. No, it is a Qualcomm ad. Bottom third of page is descriptive, as follows:
"QUALCOMM's next generation CDMA chipsets and system software is truly the future of wireless communications. By providing the bandwidth necessary to deliver full power to the Internet, our new CDMA chips transform your mobile phone into a Web browser you can carry wherever you go. In addition, QUALCOMM CDMA chips deliver superior call quality, higher connect rates, and longer talk and standby times.
The QUALCOMM name will always guarantee the integration of the most advanced features available. As manufacturers produce increasingly innovative products, QUALCOMM CDMA chips, backed by our superior support tools, customer service, and dedication to partnership, will play a critical role.
Look to the future. Look to QUALCOMM.
Sign off says: QUALCOMM [in larger, bold font] CDMA technologies [in smaller font]
Enabling the future of communications And in the lower right hand corner is what looks like a new logo: a rectangle with a cone shape pointing down on a slant, kind of like a record needle, onto a "sort of" disk , with the words "INTELLIGENCE BY QUALCOMM" in the upper right hand section fo rectangle.
Some questions: Did anyone else see this ad here or in any other magazine? Given the date the ad ran (7/24) can't we assume it was done with full awareness of the Spinco announcement? Does this sound like the way Spinco will be positioning itself? Is the logo the new Spinco logo? Does this ad give us any hint as to what Spinco's name will be?
I thought it is a great ad. Only curiosity is that on first impression it looks like an ad for PALM. Necessary coincidence or does this have a deeper meaning?<g> |
