FT, I think that the consensus among scientists is that the moon was torn from the Earth by a collision from an asteroid. It probably isn't a captured asteroid because they are usually irregular in shape. Either way, it happened billions of years ago, as shown by it having spent it's rotational energy in the friction of tidal forces, as is apparent in it's same side always facing the Earth, with nary a side to side wiggle.
