I don't think that the airline industry is a good analogy. Airlines are a transportation industry, and one that has been traditionally unionized. And UAL is not worker-owned, it is union-owned. There is a great difference between the two.

Aren't there an increasing number of disgruntled workers in all the Internet companies with the long hours & small pay when stock options are excluded & most stock option being under water which were issued prior to 2Q99?

So, what binds them to their rotten jobs? There are plenty of other opportunities out there. How likely is it that a college-educated webmaster would gladly get a union card and start reporting daily to his shop steward? The people I know in such positions would rather cut off a limb.
