Asian Stocks: Japan Rises, Led by Advantest; Taiwan Declines
By Laura Lai

Tokyo, Aug. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Japanese chipmaking equipment makers such as Advantest Corp. and Tokyo Electron Ltd. rose after industry reports showed global sales of such equipment more than doubled in June.

NEC Corp., Toshiba Corp. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. gained on a report the three chipmakers need to consign production to overseas companies to cope with rising demand, even after some announced plans to expand their own facilities. Sony Corp. also advanced after computer stocks lifted the U.S. Nasdaq Composite Index to its ninth gain in 10 days.

``Chips stocks will remain the highlight in the markets -- it's positive that there's still demand out there and that capital expenditure plans are rising,'' said Morihiko Ida, the chief strategist of the planning and research department at Century Securities Co. Still, ``some investors will inevitably want to cash in on recent gains.''
