"The "industry standard" will be the ITU standard. It is extremely unlikely that the ITU standard will be either x2 or K56Flex in their pure form, but rather a combination of those and perhaps other 56k implementations."

The ITU is an INTERNATIONAL body, so you are exactly right. I was involved in earlier situations, ie, V.32 and V.34. Many companies had an interest in promoting their standards, but in the end, NONE of them were adopted. This was often because North American companies tended to produce products optimised for North America (duh), which did not work as well in other countries, and so forth. The final standard will attempt to be as universal as possible.

Thanks for the link to Bear/Stearns; I'll study that one. USRX will probably continue to enjoy the same advantages in the marketplace as they have in the past; it doesn't appear as though they are being challenged yet. I guess it will depend on the new company doing what is necessary to maintain that lead; since it will be run by 3COM, is there any indication that 3COM intends to change anything in the way USRX products are developed, marketed, etc.?
