Re: IBM knows what direction they have to head in. It wouldn't be a bad thing for their bottom line at all if they end up fabbing half the large CPU's in the world in a few years. The king of servers they ain't gonna be, no matter how selfish they are with their copper.

I think they should go one way or the other. Either don't fab for anyone but themselves, or get out of the server business and fab for EVERYONE. It's too much of a conflict of interest the way it looks like the system will be working the next few years. There are already reports that the Alpha is binning well above 1 Ghz. For example, say the POWER4 is going to get a 6-12 month delay. Would you want to be Compaq in that situation? Do you want to rely on IBM's integrity to get your chips out when IBM's are in trouble? IBM could easily delay all other chips and chalk it up to the copper process just so they don't fall behind. I'm sure the powers that be have already thought of a situation like this and weighed the alternatives, but from the info we all have, it seems like a BIG conflict of interest. The only thing I can think of is that they are charging so much money for the chips that they could care less who sells them because they will be getting a nice cut of every server that contains IBM copper.
