Semiconductor-equipment sales are expected to rise 46%, to $37.1 billion, in 2000, according to the Information Network, a New Tripoli, Pa., market research firm. The major beneficiaries of this explosive growth include leading chip-equipment makers such as Applied Materials, ASML, KLA-Tencor, and Nikon, the Information Network said. Total global semiconductor capital spending will increase 54% in 2000 and about 41% in 2001, the firm said.

"The equipment market is six months behind the semiconductor market, and that market shows no signs of slowing, as bookings continue to grow and prices continue to firm," said Robert Castellano, president of the Information Network.
