Maybe one reason AMD lowered Athlon prices so much is because Duron fell flat on its face. With back to school buying season here now, and Christmas season not much later, they found themselves with a gaping hole in their product lineup. I don't know what kind of TV ads you see, but here, the "buy Johnny or Sally that PC for back to school" ads run more than Coke or Chevy, or any other commodity, ads. And, they're, rough guess, 95% Intel, 5% AMD. I think I've seen one Gateway AMD TV ad recently. All the rest are Intel.
Intel can the lion's share of the chips the OEMs need right now. AMD could soak up the rest, but apparently they weren't selling enough without the lower cost chip, hence, the price cuts to Athlon.
