Established Companies with Accelerating Growth and Low PEG ratios

When I created this screen, I was looking for an
undervalued established company. I wanted to place some of
my investment capital in a Dividend Reinvestment Plan
(DRIP). This was going to be a long-term investment
(10+ years), so I want a company that has shown
consistently improving fundamental.

I used MarketPlayer’s Screening Engine
(http://www.marketplayer.com/client/screening/engine.html).
Here are the criteria that I used:

Dividend Yield > 0.5
5 Year Dividend Growth > 0
1 Year EPS Growth > 5 Year EPS Growth
5 Year EPS Growth > 10 Year EPS Growth
10 Year EPS Growth > 0
1 Year EPS Growth > Trailing P/E
5 Year EPS Growth > Trailing P/E
Trailing P/E < 25
1 Year Revenue Growth > 5 Year Revenue Growth
5 Year Revenue Growth > 1
PEG < 1.1

On July 20, 2000, this screen identified 11 companies:

Symbol Company Name Price Yield
PHM Pulte Corp 21.88 0.73
FLXS Flexsteel Industries Inc 12.25 4.24
FTFC First Federal Capital Corp 10.75 4.09
HVT Haverty Furniture Inc 10.88 1.84
MO Philip Morris Companies Inc 25.69 7.47
JCI Johnson Controls Inc 51.59 2.19
FRE Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp 39.94 1.70
FNM Federal National Mortgage Association 50.38 2.22
NCBC National Comm Bancorp 17.56 2.39
CI Cigna Corp 98.25 1.26
FDO Family Dollar Stores Inc 17.25 1.28

I was already enrolled in Johnson Controls’ DRIP, so I
looked a little closer to see if I wanted to increase my
holdings. I reviewed their quarterly and annual financial
statements and looked at recent news. I also reviewed
Investor’s Business Daily (http://www.investors.com/) to
get their ratings on Johnson Controls.

Here are IBD’s ratings for Johnson Control’s:

Overall 59
Technical 49
Fundamental 90
Attractiveness 29
Group Technical 62
Group Fundamental 86
EPS 92
RS 35
Grp RS B
SMR B
Acc/Dist B

It appears that the market was not fairly valuing Johnson
Controls. JCI is a thinly traded stock. Institutions and
insiders hold most shares. This helps to explain the
lagging performance of the stock.

Looking at the stocks chart for the past year, I noticed
that one year ago it was selling for $70 @ share. Now it
was selling in the low $ 50’s, with no deterioration in
fundamentals. I saw no warning signs.

Based on this analysis, I decided to increase my holdings.

So, how have the stocks that this screen identified done
since July?

TKR Price Current Change % Change
PHM 21.88 28.6875 6.8075 31.1%
FLXS 12.25 12.3125 0.0625 0.5%
FTFC 10.75 11.6875 0.9375 8.7%
HVT 10.88 11.1875 0.3075 2.8%
MO 25.69 32.0625 6.3725 24.8%
JCI 51.59 53.50 1.91 3.7%
FRE 39.94 41.50 1.56 3.9%
FNM 50.38 55.25 4.87 9.6%
NCBC 17.56 19.625 2.065 11.7%
CI 98.25 97.375 -0.875 -0.9%
FDO 17.25 17.5625 0.3125 1.8%

I think that I will keep this screen and use it from time
to time.
