Good points Mr. Dog. However, the 100 times longer per year must amount to very little real time since the Tandem Computers are so reliable. Sun are also heavily into the telco/switch market place, or at least I get the impression they are gettint into it, where five 9's reliability becomes really important. Of course, telephone switches aren't quite as mission critical as banking systems.

And you're right about hardware failures being less significant. I've used Solaris for years, as well as Windows, and it always amazes me that you can upgrade most Solaris applications while people are running the old version (I have no idea how they do this). My experience with Solaris was one reboot every 60 days, but that was because I (naively) installed NIS+ instead of NIS. I guess NIS+ was an experiment that Sun regretted in the long run, and I hear they don't even run it themselves.
