Why they pay so much is beyond me. But then, it is almost like a mutual fund. Its the shareholder's money not ours...

Consider that the accounting rules (HGB) in Germany are much tighter... hence U.S. companies show much more equity etc.. than continental European ones. That effect was striking when Daimler-Benz switched to GAAP form the HGB.

One often heard reasoning is that the Europeans slept at the wheel, so they simply have to pay up in order to prevent their own takeover, or simply grow...
they did nothing in the early and mid 90s....while the large U.S. companies cnsolidated and grew a lot then.
