It would be difficult, if not impossible, to sue the media folks for negligence because they owe you no duty.

I am not a lawyer but I guess I mean they are criminally negligent or liable or whatever the term is. In the same sense in that if I yell FIRE! in a crowded movie house and a panic ensues I am going to be arrested. I would imagine that civil actions would follow by the people that were harmed.

The news services didn't originate the yelling of "fire" in this case. But they amplified it. In fact, without them, this would not have happened.
