"Of the five price momentum stocks in Jubak’s Picks -- Ariba, JDS Uniphase, Mercury Interactive (MERQ, news, msgs), Network Appliance (NTAP, news, msgs), and PMC-Sierra -- I’m currently worried about slippage in two: JDS Uniphase and Network Appliance.... Both show short-term price trends that are weaker than their own long-term trends and significantly weaker than the short-term performance of other stocks on this list. Both also face serious resistance not too far above current prices. JDS Uniphase closed at $124.50 on Aug. 22. The stock’s July high was near $136, and its March high at about $146. Network Appliance, which closed at $94.375 on Aug. 22, faces a July high of more than $112, and a March high of about $120. Both stocks are likely to struggle as they attempt to punch through those levels. But both money flow and on-balance volume, two indicators of whether cash is flowing into or out of the stock, are headed in the right direction....
"In judging momentum stocks, I also like to sneak a peak at fundamentals. I know that’s anathema to many price-momentum investors, but I don’t see any reason to avoid using available information in the name of "style purity." In the case of Network Appliance, for example, I think it helps to know that the company reported earnings on Aug. 14...."
