Japan's Appliance Server Market Growing Explosively, IDC Japan Says
August 28, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Japan's appliance server market is expected to grow by an average annual rate of 200 percent, reaching 383,500 servers in 2003 compared to the 5,400 units in operation in 1999, said IDC Japan.

The research company on Aug. 25 released the report on the domestic market for appliance servers, encompassing trends and market predictions.

According to the report, Market growth is also predicted to surge on a value basis, increasing by an average annual rate of 190 percent to reach 200 billion yen in 2003 compared to 2.65 billion yen in 1999. (106.87 yen = US$1)

Appliance servers are dedicated to a specific, limited task, such as being a Web server, a file server or a caching server. They are supplied as turnkey products with an optimal configuration of hardware and software.

Another merit is that to expand functionality with applications servers, users simply add physical hardware, which creates much less risk of generating systems-related problems.
