TIM, NEC AND SIEMENS TO WORK TOGETHER IN UMTS TRIAL

NEC Corporation (NEC) (NASDAQ: NIPNY) (FTSE: 6701q.l) announced that TIM (Telecom Italia Group) and NEC have agreed to work together in technical trials for the next generation mobile communication system, UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System).

TIM is the largest mobile telephone operator in Europe having around 18.5 million customers in Italy (31/12/99), operating also in Austria, France, Greece, Spain, Czech Republic and other countries. TIM is also investing in operators outside Europe such as Brazil, Chile and Argentina giving the TIM group more than 30 million customers worldwide. NEC has been one of major suppliers of TIM's mobile handsets. This time, NEC is to provide both infrastructure systems and handsets to help understanding UMTS capability, with the aim to offer a commercial UMTS service in the future.
