You haven't suffered enough yet!

Mike's Magical Silicon Valley Seven-Company On-Site Two-Hour Investment Research Tour

Okay, à la TMF's research of Iomega's parking lot on Sunday, I have added my own refinements to researching seven important Silicon Valley companies. These are:

1. Is the parking lot not only adequately filled with vehicles, but the right kind.

2. Is the front door clean and shiny? No smudgy brass, I want to see reflections! And also no one standing around outside smoking like this was a government building in Arizona. Time is my money!

3. Finally, is the corporate name and logo impressive and displayed to good advantage? We're talking brand imprinting here.

Well, this shouldn't take very long at all to eyeball. Okay, on the 101 in the middle of San Jose, let's get off this slab and review addresses. This is easy, seven companies, and four of them (CSCO INTC JDSU BRCD) are right here in San Jose. Two others (NTAP and SNDK) are just across the 101 in Sunnyvale. And the last one is in ... San Mateo!

Who knew Siebel was in San Mateo? That's not Silicon Valley. Jeez, that's almost all the way back to San Francisco! Well, I guess it's Mike's Magical Silicon Valley Six-Company On-Site Two-Hour Investment Research Tour.

Hmmm ... right off a little defect exposes itself in the on-site research system. It's not Sunday. In fact, it's Thursday.

Okay, moving on to criteria 2 and 3. Wow, look at Excite@Home! Nice building! Stunning use of corporate logo. Just the right size, too, and effective application of red accent in the @. And look at Network Associates! And now Ampex, whatever that is. Novel but effective use of black and white checks. And lookit the Doubletree over there! ... wait, no, I guess that's a hotel. But looks good all the same!

Hell, everything looks good. I guess Intel and Cisco and the others probably do, too. So much for criteria 2 and 3. Let's just call this Mike's 30-minute San Jose Tour and blow this popstand for the coast! Over there's Hiway 17 to Los Gatos and on to Santa Cruz. I know that road!

Footnote. On reviewing corporate addresses, it appears that the tour may have strayed into Santa Clara. Or maybe it was never in San Jose to begin with.
