Mergers hardly ever work out. Getting the cultures of two different companies to work better than independently almost impossible. Several studies have been done through the years supporting the notion mergers do not work out for the shareholders. Usually mergers are structured in such a way as to improve the financial health of the executives making the decision. Surprise. Surprise.

In addition, I feel a lot of takeovers are called mergers for reasons of internal company politics.

If two companies are so hot for each other, why not just structure some contractual agreements on marketing, product development, etc? Have a trial merger for a year or two and see how it works out.

In any event, this announcement today makes me happy. Seems the market agrees.

Regards,

Jack Simmons
