Motorola Aligns with Nanovation Technologies
Broadband Access Provider to Join Forces With Leading Supplier of All-Optical Devices
DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2000--Nanovation Technologies, a world-class innovator in integrated optical components, announced today a strategic relationship with Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news) Broadband Communications Sector, a leading worldwide provider of integrated and interactive broadband access solutions. As part of the relationship, Motorola has made a significant equity investment in the company.

The strategic relationship with Motorola's Broadband Communications Sector, a leader in HFC network solutions, further solidifies Nanovation Technologies' path for rapid development and commercialization of innovative all-optical devices enhancing network speed and capacity. The relationship, announced today at the National Fiber Optics Engineers Conference (NFOEC), will also help ensure Motorola's competitive position as industry and consumer demands for more high-speed, cost-effective bandwidth climb to new levels.

The two companies will immediately begin work to incorporate Nanovation's all-optical networking technology into Motorola's HFC and Fiber to the Home access network solutions. Nanovation's components, which include both indium phosphide and silica-on-silicon products that can be produced in mass, enable high-capacity, two-way local access networks. These networks are designed to provide individual homes with high-speed Internet access, video-on-demand, cable television, and telecommunication services, which gives end users access to virtually unlimited bandwidth. These integrated optical components can provide an optimal way to eliminate the inherent inefficiencies of electronic-based components, which hinder the speed and capacity of today's networks.

``Motorola strives to provide our customers with the most advanced optical network capabilities possible, and we believe Nanovation Technologies is on the forefront of developing innovative and state-of-the-art technology in this field,'' said David Grubb, Vice President of Network Technology for Motorola's Broadband Communications Sector. ``With Nanovation's low-cost, ultra-compact components, we can now envision the real possibility of fiber to every home.''

``Our relationship with Motorola's Broadband Communications Sector, one of the world's most established providers of integrated and interactive broadband services, is a core component of our overall business strategy,'' said Bob Chaney, Nanovation's acting CEO. ``This relationship puts a strong industry partner by our side to demonstrate that our approach to integrated optical circuits will substantially change telecommunications and data communications as we know it. Nanovation's reliable, mass-produced fiber-optic components are key in the wide deployment of advanced high-speed local services, which would be prohibitively expensive if attempted with conventional copper-wire technology.''

Nanovation will use the investment to enhance its manufacturing capability and its capacity to deliver the integrated optical solutions that will bring next generation optical networks to the home.
