willcousa - RE: "Look at CPQ's experience with saviors."
Actually, CPQ's experience with saviors has been pretty good. They have only had 2. In late 1991, founder Rod Cannion was replaced by Eckhard Pfeiffer. At the time, CPQ stock had just taken a big hit, dropping more than 50% after it announced its first losing quarter ever (sound familiar?).

Those who bought any time in the first year after Pfeiffer took over saw their money increase 400% by the end of Pfeiffer's second year. I'll take a 400% increase in 2 years any time - but as my first purchase of CPQ was actually in mid-92, I saw that 400% increase in only about 14 months.

CPQ's second savior was when Capellas replaced Eckhard Pfeiffer. Since Capellas took over, the stock price has gone from 22 to 34, a 56% increase. In exactly the same time, DELL has lost about 2% of its value.

So if your point was that DELL has done well by sticking with a winner while CPQ has suffered by changing management, the evidence is against you.

Not that I advocate changing DELL management - just making the point that your example does not hold financial water.
