Al, are you trying for mightylakers to induct you into the FUDsters lineup?

<<Do you also assume that Siemens and Alcatel won't make WCDMA chips? If so, on what basis, other than wishful thinking?>>

Are you saying that those who might have differing opinions sit around with fingers, legs, arms & eyes crossed hoping against hope that Siemens & Alcatel won't make wcdma chips? Did someone pee in your wheaties this morning?

FWIW, it seems to me that except for QCOM chip makers, there has been little success in producing commercial grade CDMA chips. Until proven otherwise, WCDMA is just CDMA plus a bunch of (oxymoron here folks) IPR that appears to degrade the quality that is available with CDMA. I would think that this would make for a tougher chip to get to meet specs. It is quite likely they will have time to develop WCDMA chips as I am not aware of any successful field trials of WCDMA - or even a set standard for it to operate from. We do know that there are only a few companies that can make a commercially viable CDMA chip though. I would tend to think that Siemens and Alcatel has plenty of time to create a commercial grade WCDMA chip, so maybe you will eventually have a point after all.

<<Have you even researched their capabilities? {Siemens and Alcatel} Do you think Siemens in particular knows nothing about the CDMA air interface?>>

Have you? What are their strong points in CDMA or WCDMA technology that would point to their ability to succeed in making commercial grade WCDMA chips?

<<(On the one hand we'll have people on these threads argue that LAS-CDMA is make believe CDMA - and then those same people will just as strongly assert that QCOM would be due its royalty.) >>

Sure.... why not? Like WCDMA, until LAS-CDMA can show it works in the real world with economically commercial potential, it is vaporware in my book..... not actually make believe CDMA, but make believe none the less.... And if LAS-CDMA uses any of QCOM's IPR, I'll be singing in the choir that QCOM is due a fair royalty for their IPR..... So what exactly was your point anyway?

<<[SpinCo and NOK/TXN are not the only likely players in the WCDMA chip biz.]>>

Even IJ said there would be competition in this space. I like QCOM's prospects competing in this space against any other wannabe WCDMA chip maker. Obviously CDMA works very well in the real world & CDMA is superior to the stuff the GSM cabal & AT&T offer, so QCOM's CDMA chips must be of fairly high quality..... QCOM should earn a significant share of the WCDMA chip market.... that is, if WCDMA is able to be successfully deployed.

Sorry if this is wishful thinking in your considered opinion, but until I see cold hard facts that change my opinion, I'd have to say that the GSM cabal & the LAS-CDMA crowd are doing a lot more wishful thinking than I am.
