Kodak teams up with SFA to Sell Digital Pictures Over Cable Television

San Francisco, Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Eastman Kodak Co. said it plans to sell pictures over cable television as the world's largest photography broadens its sales of digital products and services.
The Kodak Channel will let users charge photo prints to their cable-television bill. It will target advertising based on the content of the photos posted on the TV set. The service will be test marketed in a few months, said Dan Carp, Kodak's chief executive, at a publishing trade show.
Digital photography, which doesn't use film, is expected to become the main way for taking pictures as the technology improves and costs drop. Film sales accounted for about two-thirds of Kodak's $14.1 billion in revenue last year. Kodak has been making investments in companies that store and print photos on the Internet.
Kodak has entered into a partnership with Scientific Atlanta, Inc., to develop a way to display photographs on, and order prints from, television sets without using a computer. Both kinds of ventures will allow Kodak to make money selling paper, ink and photofinishing services.
The convergence of the Internet and cable is approaching, and it's approaching like a force 5 hurricane,'' Carp said.
The Kodak Channel will incorporate other new technologies developed by Kodak, including three-dimensional images and digital watermarking that protects copyrighted pictures, he said.
Shares of Rochester, New York-based Kodak fell 1.13 to 64 in New York Stock Exchange trading. They've dropped 3.3 percent this year. |
