I think Tom said that his down clocked 1.13 GHz P3 worked perfectly so I guess it is "only" a heat problem. It would be interesting to do some tests with 1.0 Ghz parts that are produced in the new c0 stepping. If the error lied there this would be devastating news for Intel. But I don't think this is very probable.

The problem is undoubtably a speedpath, which is not really a "heat problem". Some chunk of logic just doesn't run properly at 1.13GHz.

This is also why the 2.0GHz P4 demo was a fraud. They were not using any of the logic which is non-functional at that speed.
