It sounds nice, doesn't it: a CPU/motherboard that does everything, and is made by INTC. However, to take the modem part of this hypothesis, modems do depend a lot on instruction sets on two sides - provider and client. I've clocked USRX v34/28.8 modems against several other brands, for instance, and noted repeatedly that the USRX modem attains real 28.8 speed, and higher at ftp using compression.

Part of the reason for this is the provider (a partner of our company) has usrx modems on his side. So the modem issue is more complex and would mean that INTC would have to enter the modem _and_ router market probably in order to achieve such throughput.

BTW: encoding/decoding of MPEG1 and 2 is a somewhat similar case.
