Rudedog,<<<The notion that Linux is competitive with Solaris because it is a Unix variant is laughable.>>>

According to Netcraft, a research firm, Linux is currently the operating system on 36 percent of Web servers. But, more importantly, Linux is about Open Source software development using microprocessor based servers.

SUNW can only employ a limited number of programmers to develop, enhance, and maintain their proprietary OS.

Open Source software development as the name suggest allow many more programmers to have access and contribute to OS software development. (Just think of all those Indian programmers slogging away in Bangalore or whereever).

Organizations will increasingly have difficulty in allowing any one company to maintain in secrecy OS software.

Similarly IBM has for years maintained the same RASmataz that you are attributing to SUNW and their proprietary OS.

The handwriting is on the wall. Dinosaurs will have to give way.
