I don't think it's "visual" tracking either way. It is possible to use cellular technology for location by signal triangulation. In fact, in the near future, cell phones will provide location data for 911 calls - and perhaps for other services as well (traffic reports, local weather, "nearest McDonald's", etc.) However, cellular triangulation requires cell towers, is not very accurate, and is not available everywhere. My guess is the trucking company is going to use cellular for communicating the trucks location to the tracking station but use GPS for actual location. GPS service is free. (Yes, I know the hardware/software costs - but the signal is still free.) I can imagine satellite uplinks (for sending the truck's location) being pricey, but cellular ought to work fine as long as the trucks are within range of a tower. Sam Going back to lurk mode now. :-)
