This is exactly the kind of code that will give Willy headaches. Take the press releases about "advanced branch prediction" with a grain of salt. Some branches are impossible to predict.

gcc also represents the kind of code that is run on workstations and severs. Unless they can ramp the P4 quickly, Intel will lose this market to AMD.


Thanks for the analysis. I knew that some linux benchmarks were very positive for the athlon, but didn't know that 'slick will' could have issues here.

Sounds like a great targeted market: cost-effective unix/linux web and other servers.

Start with the t-bird and/or mustang, and move further into these markets with sledgehammer...

Have you looked at the recently published materials on sledgehammer (i.e., the developer's package)? Do you think that there will Linux community support for same?
