hi david

i'm surprised that you don't have 'explorer' on your list.

you ask a good question about how can we determine exactly what each item is that is running on our machines. sometimes we can just get vague hints. sometimes we can try shutting the app down to see what effect, if any, it has.

as you may know, typing 'msconfig' in the run box will take you to the system configuration utility (scu), where you can click the startup tab. this is a complete list of everything running, and also a tool for unchecking apps to keep them from starting up (remember to hit 'apply', then 'ok'). often the description in this scu dialog will offer clues and insights into the identity of each app.

another method is to enter the name into your find file manager, then right-click the file and choose 'properties'. you may then find two or three tabs to click through and more info is revealed.

yet another effective identification method is to enter the app's name into a search engine and examine the results.

of the ones you posted, wmexe is usrobotics winmodem, and systray is the system tray (the lower right hand corner of the toolbar with the assorted icons).

hope that helps

:)
