Bob:

I f I may comment on your question, using a tired response : synergy.

There is a limit to the number of gee wiz gadgets any corporation will submit to. It is all fine and dandy to have a remote well head monitor. Use Orbicomm if you want. But in my mind, it would be a significant selling point to be able to have the on-site repair crews interact with the well head monitor and homebase all on the same system. The old one billing, one set of hardware, one operations manual, one training and so forth.

Orbicomm is good at sending back data once a week or a day or an hour. But the system is useless when you have expensive manpower on-site. Why not combine the systems and get the added functionality of G* to boot. (I'm sure the troops would love to call ahead and order a pizza after a long day out on the line.)
