Acid makers fail to meet demand
By Business Reporter
LOCAL producers are failing to satisfy demand for sulphuric acid because of low capacity, it has been learnt.

One of the producers, Bwana Mkubwa mine, has almost run out of the acid because they had to cope with high demand especially from industries such as automotive battery manufacturers and other mines.

Bwana Mkubwa mine company secretary Andries Scott said his firm was producing about 9,000 tonnes of the acid per month but that was not enough to satisfy local demand.

Mr Scott said due to high demand, the acid was sold on daily basis and there was no excess for export.

He said there was currently an export order for sulphuric acid to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Bwana Mkubwa produces between 93,600 and 108,000 tonnes of acid annually for the local market only.

The company puts aside at least 36,000 tonnes of acid for its own use per annum while a total of 72,000 tonnes are sold.

Bwana Mkubwa had by July this year sold sulphuric acid worth K379 million to the export market. The company produces 300 tonnes of the acid on a daily basis.
