Historically, it was the Democratic Party that ran the big city machines, like Pendergast in Kansas City, Daley in Chicago, Tammany Hall in New York, and so forth. Republicans were the ones who sought to clean up these cities. Republicans, for example, were responsible for pushing the civil service system, promoting hiring by examination, as a means to reduce or eliminate patronage. Republicans were usually responsible for laws calling for competitive bidding, as a way of precluding graft in contract allocation. Heck, you may even know enough history to recall that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, and that the Democratic Party was the pro- slavery party........... |
