Pete,

I have no doubt that having Republicans in control of the Congress has helped with fiscal sanity.

I have no doubt that Reagan was directly responsible for the explosion of debt in the 1980's (his own budget director warned him of this.)

I also have no doubt that Clinton was the key player in bringing the deficit under control. The 1993 Deficit Reduction Act, which you are ignoring, turned the corner.

In 1993, the deficit was $360,000,000,000. The bill went into effect part way through 1994, and the deficit dropped to $265,000,000,000. In 1995, the deficit dropped to $160,000,000,000. This was a reduction of over 50% from the first year of Clinton's presidency.

The first Clinton/Republican Congress budget was passed in 1995, and went into effect in 1996.

I'll repeat. By the time the Republican Congress passed their first budget in 1995, the deficit had been cut by more than 50%.
