Gerry: I am basing my comment on the "good doctor"'s own permises and my knowledge of EM theory and Maxwell equations in general. Conductive layers will screen responses from any underlying layers. The question is always what is the nature of the eddies current generated by overlaying strata.

Not being sufficiently knowledgable in geology, I do not know what percentage of hydrocarbon deposits are over layed with salt deposits, how often does one meet brines on the way to the productive strata and what are the electrical characteristics of such overlaying strata. I would guess, however, that non conductive overlaying strata would be the exception rather than the rule. However, I would be happy to be proven wrong.
