Re: The S80 benchmark was run on 10/29/99 with an availability date of 3/1/00 - how do you explain that in the light of your statements about current availability? Just as much of a "future product" when the test was run as the UE10000 you are carping about.

Rudedog,

Wouldn't a fair comparison be a Sun system that became available around 3-01-2000? Or an IBM system that becomes available 3-01-2001?

Of course I understand that the benchmarks are done before systems become available.

It's like saying the P4 beats the Athlon on a given benchmark by X percentage. Can you buy the P4? No. Can you buy the Althon? Yes. Does this take into account what speed the Athlon will be at when the P4 becomes available? No. Do you see what I'm saying?

Your comments about the Sparc III is a lot more interesting - I am also surprised that those processors were not used, if there is really a launch planned any time in the next 6 months.

It sure makes this comment seem interesting, although I'm not expecting anything. I think they were just trying to piss off Intel:

"Sun Microsystems’ Solaris team is very excited about AMD’s x86-64 technology. We applaud AMD’s ISV compatibility and upgrade strategy as well as their open technology announcement today. We will be following their progress closely as this technology comes to market," said Anil Gadre, vice president and general manager for Solaris at Sun Microsystems.
