It sure makes this comment seem interesting, although I'm not expecting anything. I think they were just trying to piss off Intel...

It's too early to expect anything or not yet. A chip announcement does not a solution make. Who's signed up to build AMD x86-64 boxes? Of those, who will be happy to rely on Linux as the OS for it and who will want something more comprehensive? Is Microsoft going to port a *second* version of W2k-64 to this thing?

That's the problem with an announcement like this chip: so many pieces to the puzzle that you can't expect anything at all until somebody pulls them all together. Solaris x86 never found a Pentium box builder who really wanted to sell it. So though Solaris x86 could be ported over to this new chip at least as quickly and easily as any other x86 OS, can Sun and AMD persuade OEM's, ISV's (chiefly Oracle), and etc. etc. etc.

Anything is possible...if I were Sun I would definitely have a whole army of people, from Solaris to Java to storage, making joint sales calls with AMD right this minute. "Watching with great interest" is just code for ignoring; but something *could* be made to happen with enough effort.
