As you know, in communications Bandwidth is life. The higher the frequency the more BW you get. However, you start running in to problems of HF omnidirectional signals. Some of which are rather ugly. Personally, I don't believe that a CSMA solution such as 802.311 will ever work in an ISP environment, it is not just a matter of the communications itself, it is the basic architecture that I have a problem with (for example how do you maintain an IP address when moving across town?) This is a very complex issue. However, I do believe that existing telco cell network could work quite well for wireless roaming applications.
I think I said this before, but I may very well put a wireless LAN in my house. Proxim has a box that I could put in for about 700 bucks. That would be cheaper than wiring the house. At that point, I can get a cheap router, a firewall, and I am good to go.
