Life is not necessary for a local decrease in entropy. Beautifully organized snowflake crystals form in a cloud of randomly moving water molecules. The water vapor itself rises against the pull of gravity. The entire evaporation/rain cycle moves huge amounts of water to the highlands, where it runs back into the sea. Mountains are pushed up against the pull of gravity. All of this is at the expense of the sun running down, but so is it in the case of life.

There is far more that we don't know and understand, than what we do. We don't even know what constitutes most of the mass of the Universe. A finite Universe doesn't make sense, but neither does an infinite one.
