I think that you all have it wrong. When God breaks wind, a tremendous amount of methane gas must be generated, which would then kill the birds. Just like the canaries in the mines, the birds would be the first to go, then the people would become sick.

It probably didn't help that the people were cramming as many dead birds down their throats as they could hold. Ten homers sounds like a lot of birds to eat.
