I agree, High Speed data has been in use for some time now.
And, Mobile is another problem. Also, it is in fact, not all that difficult to build a wireless LAN.
However, when you start to scale wireless, you don't only run into the problem of RF transmission. You also have some pretty knotty networking issues that have to be worked out.
Bandwidth aside, how do you control/manage network traffic?
Second, as you move about, how do you tell routers that you are moving from subnet to another? If you are running something like 802.11, i.e. a MAC layer addressing scheme that relies on upper layers to provide networking (i.e.TCP/IP). you are going to have this problem.

Again, bandwidth aside, if you use a cell infrastructure, you can control networking via switching. In any network, It is not the point to point communications that eats bandwidth, and for 98% of the applications that would be used by a wireless workstation do not require all that much speed in order to accomplish what they need to do.

The Biffoons talk about watching TV while driving down the road. Pure hogwash. I can't not do that from my computer at work (with any reasonable quantity), and I am attached to the Internet via 100mb switched network and OC12's to 6 different ISP's.

I would say, if you could be me a true 64kb (before compression - i.e. equivalent to a single ISDN link) switched link, you go fill 99% of the requirements needed in mobile applications.
