true...the netting which you describe removes some of the risk.
i still maintain though that the huge growth in notional amounts shows that something has happened that is unique in the history of speculating man...you just have to look at the enormous blowing up of the GSE's balance sheets and the rise in asset backed debt issuance and debt issuance in general, as well as the staggering increase in the money supply to see that something's seriously out of whack here. at some point the economy's ability to service all this leverage will be overwhelmed...
