Ted-
I never said speed doesn't matter as a permanent proposition. I had hoped that my posts on this issue had made clear that I believe the 1+ ghz race will one day, in the next couple years or so, become important again.
Please keep in mind that I was saying this at a time when Intel had the fastest (1.13) part and before we knew that there was going to be a problem. I have been accused by some nice guy over on the moderated thread of wanting to "stop the madness" just as AMD was opening up a speed lead. So be it.
In the case of Intel, the race has now proven to be expensive and embarrassing. Maybe AMD is going to be totally successful in bringing out higher speeds every month all the way to the moon. If that is their plan, they should go for it. But as an Intel shareholder, I care a lot more right now about getting it right than getting it fast.
