Web Debacle Claims Head of AltaVista UK Chief

LONDON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - AltaVista said on Wednesday its UK managing director Andy Mitchell had
resigned following the company's well-publicised failure to deliver the flat-fee Internet access in Britain that it
had promised.

The U.S. Web portal and search company said it would now focus on its core business of Internet searches
after its troubled foray into Internet service provision.

Last week it halted plans to offer unlimited Internet surfing for a single low-cost payment in the UK after
admitting -- following a media campaign to find the elusive users -- that the service had never got up and
running.

It caused upheaval in March in the British Internet access market, which is dominated by Freeserve, when it
announced what would have been a groundbreaking service in a country where phone calls are paid for by the
minute.

A statement quoted Pierre Paperon, president of AltaVista Europe, as saying: "The mistakes in our planned
Internet access service -- which we do acknowledge -- probably made Andy's departure inevitable."

AltaVista, majority owned by Internet incubator , appointed Stephanie Himoff as acting managing director.

AltaVista still offers Internet access in Britain, but on a pay-per-minute basis like most other providers.
