Maui,
re: "I see myself defending I didn't intend to in the first place."
I know what you mean, I hate it when that happens.
re: "especially when you know that the cash cow will dry up in a few years"
The "post-PC era"? That another discussion, but from the current demand, it looks like the "post-PC era" is going to be great for PC sales.
re: "every time your CPU business has hickups (agreed there have been quite a few lately), do you panic and mobilize your whole army, or do you make minor adjustments. My preference is later."
Bad decisions have a tendency to lead to bad situations which usually lead to more bad decisions. My guess is that the roots of the recent problems go back at the least two-three-four years. Intel should have been more aggressive with their technology, they should have been more aggresive in starting to build capacity, they were probably complacent because they lacked competition. The hell of this business has always been the planning lead time, how do you know now what demand or competition is going to be in three years? Still, you expect a lot more from a company that has defined excellence for many years.
I'm very disappointed that Intel has managed to give their competition the lead, in execution and maybe in desktop technology.
But, I think we agree more than we disagree, let leave the thread to the AMDroids, who seem to have taken it anyway.
