lkj,

It's the embedded computing age. Everyone is supporting multiple processors. There is nothing wrong or special about this. Probaly bad news for Windows application developers, but hitting the compiling button is not all that bad if Palm can
"completely" hide the processor layer.

Well everybody would trade in an arm and a leg to be in Palm's place at this time.

I don't quite understand this logic. Everybody is doing it- so it must be ok for the leader to do it too?

The Palm is not an embedded product. There are third party (>6000) apps available for it- only in binary format. Sure, the developer for these apps could always recompile the source- not a problem for the developer, but what about the end user?

Can you see Intel's next desktop chip or Compaq's next Desktop computer available in BestBuy/Circuit City not being able to run all the window's apps out there?

"It's the applications stupid", as the saying goes (I'm not calling you stupid :)

Binary application compatibality will be very important for future palm compatible products. Why do you think that both Handspring and Sony choose to use the Dragonball processor and a screen size and button layout exactly similiar to Palm's? Simple answer: So that they could depend on their customers using the >6000 software apps out there!

Hey, Sony is making such a push/big deal about future multimedia capabilities about their entry, do you think that someone forgot to tell them about the StrongArm or the XScale?

I know some of you are about to bring up Java. I think Java is still a little premature for the PDA market.

Java, dosen't solve this problem in the short run. None of the >6000 apps out there will run on a java virtual machine.
There are no java apps for a palm out there that are of any relevance (yet).
