Tiger, Neo: I had to work late and only caught the last half-hour of the "Fall of Newt Gingrich" special on PBS. Whatever you wanna say about Newt, he's a guy with a lot of charisma who seized the moment in '94. Even Barney Franks acknowledged his skill in politics. The most interesting comment I heard in the last half-hour came from Trent Lott, who called Newt's critics (within the Republican Party) "Puritans and ingrates." Strong language. If the Republicans do win the presidency, House and Senate this year, look for some major splits to develop between the right wing of the Republican Party and the moderates, especially in the House. As I read yesterday, Carter in '86 had a Democratic Senate and House, and he was always fighting with congressional leaders, which hurt the record of his administration. Bottom line: Both Newt and Clinton lost a great deal of popularity because they let their Little General do their thinking for them. So they have that in common. Lott, however, said "Newt has a very big brain."
