Unfortunately for your way of thinking, the head nurse who told my wife in '92 that she voted for Clinton "because he has a nice ass" is representative of millions of Americans. She doesn't read the papers or participate in SI chat rooms. She's not going to split Monicagate into "sex" on one side and "abuse of power" on the other side like you do. All she knows is that she sees Clinton on TV a lot and he's still actively doing his job, and that's good, and the economy is good, and some things are getting better, and we're not at war, and things are going fairly well, even though gas prices are a little high.

I think perhaps the only people who do make these abstract distinctions in Monicagate are those of us who spend too much damn time on this thread, myself included.

Actually, the puritanical observation came from my daughter, who spent a month in Europe after graduating from college. I've heard other people make similar comments about how Europeans view Americans with a smile in certain affairs of the heart. Puritanism/fundamentalism/right-wingism/whatever you want to call it of course remains a force in our society. That's why Dubya showed up at Bob Jones U. when he was losing momentum to McCain. He wasn't there to see about enrolling one of his daughters in the school.
